Ready or Not, Here Comes the NBA!

I watched the Sixers beat up on the Celts in their first pre-season game the other day, and I was surprised by how much fun it was. The fans are not yet back, but with a bit of audio wizardry by the arena, you almost thought they were actually there. And of course, the Sixers showed some promise!

So, what to make of this season? All eyes are on the Lakers to see if they can repeat, and they probably will. But NBA seasons offer lots of surprises. And as you start following your favorite team, you might want to check back on this site by Liberty Ballers that assesses the main challenges each team faces.

Meanwhile, if you are a Sixers fan, this post offers some useful insights from the first pre-season game. Here is my (way, way too early) predictions for surprises this season

  • Shake Milton will emerge as a premier 6th man, generating consistent offense as needed
  • Dwight Howard will transform the Sixes second unit and it will become a strength instead of a weakness for the team
  • Mr. Maxey will dazzle when Doc allows him to, and by playoff time may have thrust his way into the rotation
  • Joel Embiid will move a level up and challenge for the league MVP
  • Ben Simmons will not start uncorking 3’s – not yet

Onward!

Leicester City Stuns the Known World!

There may be aliens somewhere wondering what a Leicester City is. And why are humans so worked up over a Leicester?

It turns out that Leicester is one of the oldest cities in the UK. And it is the home of a football squad that was generously called mediocre. Their chances of winning the premier league were one in 5,000. And they won.

Now that is something that even an alien could get excited about!

Michael Jordan on Taking the Final Shot

Here is the quote

‘I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed’.

Jordan is considered by many to be the best basketball player ever. And yet, he was well aware of his shortcomings. You might ask why that did not destroy his confidence. It is because his confidence was based on his preparation to play, not on what happened during the game.

.This is what John Wooden preached. Life is not about the ultimate question – did you win the big game. It is how you prepared yourself to do the best that you can. That is who you really are.
