Cocktail Hour: A Drink Named After a Hat? Welcome the “Brown Derby”!

First things first. Is the Brown Derby cocktail any good? The answer is “yes”. It is a bourbon, grapefruit, honey mix that hits all the right notes.

Ok. With that done, how did it get its name? That all starts from a restaurant that looked like this

Yes, it is a restaurant shaped like a hat that is wearing a hat. WTF!

In fact, the story is more complicated than that. Robb shares the delightful story — one that you might share with your special friend as you mix him or her your own version of the Brown Derby.

And here is the recipe

Brown Derby

  • 2 oz. bourbon
  • 1 oz. grapefruit juice
  • 0.25 oz. lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz. honey syrup
  • 1 half-dollar sized section of grapefruit peel, with as little of the pith as possible

Add all ingredients, including grapefruit peel, to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake good and hard for eight to 10 seconds. Strain off the ice into a rocks glass over fresh ice or up in a coupe (your choice), and garnish with a grapefruit peel.

You might ask, “what is honey syrup”? You can find out more in the above linked article. In short, you need to add some water to the honey so that it will mix. Think simple syrup but with honey instead of sugar.
