I had heard about mesh networks a qhile back when I read an article about Porto in Portugal. Porto has invested in creating a mesh network for the city which changes the way web services are delivered.. Instead of relying upon a few fixed towers as relay stations, the mesh is supported from tiny devices attached to objects all over the place. For example, city buses. As the number of nodes increases, so too does the capacity of the mesh.
Mesh networking has been catching on, but slowly. Daniela Perdomo, the founder of a mesh networking company suggests that this may accelerate as cities reach their network capacities.
Very cool! I wonder if Tallinn will go that route.
