Don’t worry Londoners! Donald Trump is tweeting for you!
I didn’t think it could happen. I was sure that we had reached all time lows with Donald Trump’s various antics. From ignorant comments about people and policy, to outright lies, to blatant conflicts of interest (remember those?), obstruction of justice and so forth, you had to think that the dude had pulled all of the tricks out of his bag of nastiness.
But no. We have indeed reached a new low. How about criticizing the mayor of London just after a terror attack —- by TAKING THE MAYOR’S COMMENTS OUT OF CONTEXT! First of all, what is the president doing by commenting on this situation, other than offering America’s condolences and support? How does any commentary other than that serve America’s interests? It does not. And as an American I feel humiliated to be associated with Trump’s rude and stupid interference in British affairs.
And the Trumpster decided to go full bore, commenting on something the mayor of London said to the residents of the city. The mayor — rightfully so — went on TV to try to calm down Londoners after the attack. He said, you will see a lot more uniformed police out there, but there is no reason for alarm. MEANING — there is no reason for alarm because of the increased show of police force in reaction to the situation.
And what is wrong with that? Nothing. It is exactly what a leader does. By way of contrast, what did Trump do? With an incredible lack of empathy or respect or common sense, Trump took the mayor’s words out of context ,changing their meaning in order to try to make the mayor look stupid. Trump tweeted
At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is “no reason to be alarmed!”
You have to wonder what possessed Trump in that mad moment with his itchy fingers poised on the keyboard. It does not take too much imagination to think that Trump’s animus was driven by the fact that the mayor of London is Muslim. As a Muslim, there must be something wrong with the man, right? Everything he says and does is a joke right?`Sad to say, that is the mentality we are dealing with here.
You might expect this type of behavior from a drunken spectator at a sporting event. But from the president of the United States? And in a crisis when leaders are supposed to come together? It boggles the mind.
So we have reached a new low. And having reached a new low, I am now convinced this is not as low as things Trump related will go. Trump will go lower. And that, my friends, is a scary thought!
