Don Rickles Made People Laugh

Some comedians are just funny. You smile and chuckle at their jokes. By way of contrast, when Don Rickles got a laugh, it was a belly laugh.

How did he do it? With caustic insults. These alone would not be funny at all. But Rickles delivered them with a pose that anyone would be hard pressed to take seriously. Even Frank Sinatra — whom he kissed on the lips during his roast as if he were a Mafia Don. If that wasn’t outrageous enough, Rickles then said. “He enjoyed it!” And tried to do it again.

Vox has a great piece on Rickels with three videos that give you a flavor of his comedic style.

BTW, did you know he was the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the film Toy Story? And pop quiz – what was the name of his character in the 1970 anti-hero film “Kelly’s Heroes“?  Hint – he played a greedy, snarky supply officer.  The film starred Cint Eastwood in his prime and Telly Savalas (who had starred in “The Dirty Dozen” and would go on to play Kojak on TV).

And did you know that Rickles had a role in the 1965 cult classic, “Beach Blanket Bingo“? What was that about? The is all you need to know

In the fourth of the highly successful Frankie and Annette beach party movies, a motorcycle gang led by Eric Von Zipper kidnaps singing star Sugar Kane managed by Bullets, who hires …

Eric Von Zipper? Yes, played by Harvey Lembeck! Errr … Sorry, Don; I got distracted.

Go for it!
