We have been hearing for some time now that Vladimir Putin placed a high priority on disrupting the recent presidential elections. It sounds strange, and so it is a bit hard to get our hands around what the hell he was up to.
This statement from a BI article about testimony at the firs open Senate Intelligence committee hearing made it a bit more clear for me.
Senate intelligence committee leaders have received reports that Russia hired at least 1,000 trolls to spread fake news stories to hurt Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the presidential election.
1,000 paid trolls? That is a hell of a lot of trolls spreading a hell of a lot of fake information about one person. Imagine what it would be like if 1,000 people were spreading misinformation about you!
And that is not all. The nonsense that these 1,000 paid dudes were spreading was amplified by a person who had the podium. In this case, Donald Trump. Trump gave the trolls credibility. He made the bullshit sound almost real by spreading what they were saying as if it were part of mainstream news.
And there is more still
… the paid trolls apparently focused on swing states in an attempt to influence votes there — Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania — where people were “reading during the waning days of the election that “‘Clinton is sick,’ or ‘Clinton is taking money from whoever for some source’ … fake news.”
What was the effect? What do you think?
