If you are in a plane, that is obvious. The plane goes down. What about if you are in a democracy?
The controls in a democracy are voter preferences for solutions to policy problems. Giving voters a choice insures that they can change their minds in light of evidence about what works.
But there is a potential problem. Voters may not get a real choice. That happens when elections are rigged, as they are in certain countries. It may also happen when voters lose trust that their vote matters.

From this perspective,Donald Trump’s election is not the cause of the problem but a symptom of it. And that is a worrying thought.
